Design work for Kuretake - a Valentine-themed scrapbook page...

Title: Favorite Love Note

Omar's kindergarten class is gearing up for Valentine's day. The assignment was to independently write a sentence using inventive spelling (not necessarily in perfect grammar), and draw a picture showing who/what you love. I found this in his school folder and thought it deserves a scrapbook layout on its own.  I have days when I doubt my parenting skills, but then I see this, and it makes up for any doubt I might have had.

The lovely folks over at Kuretake are having a great Valentines-themed blog challenge. Head over there for a chance to participate and win some wonderful prizes!

My design work for Kuretake showcases the use of their white ZIG fabricolor opaque marker designed for fabrics and permanent when ironed.

This was a 1st time experiment for me to color a rubber stamp with this marker and use the marker's  ink for stamping on a velour paper.

Here are my findings:
*This technique works best on small stamps. My stamp was too large, because by the time I colored the end of the heart, at the top the ink was already dry. To reactivate the ink (to make it wet), I misted the inked stamp with a water spray bottle.
*The stamping was not entirely uniform: Some areas got more ink, some only left an impression. But perhaps the velvet surface also impacted the result. Results do vary, and I did stamp a few times again, and traced some of the words for better visibility.

To emphasize the main word 'Love,' I traced directly over the word with ZIG fabricolor marker.

Here's a close-up of my best attempt stamping and tracing with the ZIG fabricolor marker. I glued the heart on card stock, and elevated it on dimensional foam to make it visually pop off the page. I also traced the polka dot scallop border sticker with a black Kuretake ZIG Millennium pen to make it stand out more.

It seems that lately I've gone bananas over using dimensional adhesive foam to pop details off the page surface; The  photo, both title words, scalloped heart punched medallions, and the focal heart are all elevated on foam adhesive.

Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comments!
Irma

Hi Irma that's a great idea, I hadn't thought to use my fabricolor pen in that way - now I'll be experimenting. I love your layout and the story behind it. Thanks for your kind comment on my blog and for following. x

Nuostabus darbelis. Toks minimalistiškas ir labai stilingas, išlaikytas ir santūriai vyriškas. Labai labai patinka, tokia meile ir ramybe dvelkia. O nuotrauka tai fantastiškai graži :)

Labai gražus!!! Keliauja į mano favoritus :D Spalvos tobulos išreikšti meilę - raudona ir balta. :) Labai švelniai atrodo baltos širdutės. Subtilu ir gražu. Labai patiko. :)

Grazus, sviesus darbelis. Patinka man darbai ant balto popieriaus! Beja idomi pamokele.

I adore Zig!! I have Zig markers from twelve years ago, and they're still going strong. And your idea for misting the stamping ink to keep it moist is brilliant! Never thought of that . . . Here's a question for you: how do you manage to have time to work on your scrapbooking AND helm a blog? I'd love to get a blog going, but I know it would take time away from art-making . . .

A. J. Tallman I would say that 90% of all my art making, the photographing, photo editing, and blogging are done at night when everyone is sleeping. That is the only stretch of time I have that is uninterrupted by family/childcare responsibilities. It is essential for me to have this creative 'me' time to feel centered and happy. I started staying up till midnight, then 1 a.m, then 2, 3...it's rare that I'm in bed by 1. I'm really trying to find a healthier medium because lack of sleep is effecting my health. I don't think I'm the right person to advise on this matter ;)
But specifically, blogging is not time consuming once you've set yourself up with a blog. It's the type of activity you can do sitting on a couch with a laptop keeping one eye on the TV.
Also your blog can be anything you want it to be. I don't post in it everyday, and I made the decision to mainly post my artwork/scrapbooking, not personal family stories, cooking or interior decorating. I think having a predominant focus will save you time;)

*Also because I often write in both english and lithuanian, that takes 2x the time (but for me the benefit is that I don't forget my native language by writing it). You won't have that issue I assume ;)

*I believe you art journal daily(?)...I scrap at the most 2 layouts per week, so maybe that's why it seems like I have more time ;) It may slow you down initially when you're setting up and learning how everything works, but then it's as easy as breathing.

*You have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself.
Starting a blog has led me to wonderful opportunities, and unexpected friendships that turned from virtual to IRL.
Also, it makes you more interactive with a wider 'audience' than say, just having a gallery of your work. You can elaborate more on the techniques you use to make your art, you can host your own prompts and challenges that other people will get involved in.

In my case, the 'pros' of having a blog definitely outweighed the con of it taking a bit of extra time.

I hope you DO start your own blog...actually I was going to ask you that earlier. If you do, I'll be your first follower!
